Summer Sermons . . .    by Pastor Larry

On the last Sunday in April we wrapped up the series of messages in the Gospel of Mark on a high note with the Ascension. (Pun definitely intended.) Thanks to all for your prayers and encouragement.  We are celebrating with our graduates the first Sunday in May and the following Sunday is Mother’s Day.  Sermons on those mornings will be apropos to the unique emphasis of the days.

Most of the summer weeks we will be looking at how the Lord does His work through the body.  Remember that Mark concludes his Gospel saying that the Lord worked with the disciples to fulfill the great commission?  Well, the Lord has a tremendous plan for continuing to do that until He returns.   That plan and how it works today is what we will be focused on this summer.

When we head back to school we will begin a series of messages in the book of Colossians.  The centerpiece of that book is this phrase, “Christ in you, the hope of glory.” (Colossians 1:27) That is the single most exciting and mysterious truth possible.  Please begin praying for me now as I am preparing to preach God’s Word for us over these next few weeks.  Pray also for those who will hear that Word.  Ask God to anoint us to be both hearers and doers of His Word.

Betty and I, like many of you, will be taking some time away for visiting family and recharging our personal batteries over the next few weeks.  God has provided for you to hear some truly gifted preachers in our absence.  In June we will be with Nathan and Bethany at the birth of their first baby.  Preaching here will be Rev. Tom Manz, founding pastor of the Cornerstone Church here in Blue Springs.  Pray for Tom here June 14.

Worship and the Arts Highlights . . . by Travis Velder

I wanted to take this opportunity to promote the worship band that will be leading our youth at Student Life Camp this June 22-26.  Ornan’s Floor just released their first CD in June of 2008 and have based their ministry on a specific verse.  It's 1 Chronicles 21:24. David attempts to purchase a threshing floor from Ornan the Jebusite to build an altar for the Lord. Ornan offers the floor and animals for sacrifice, but David refuses: "For I will not take what is yours for the Lord, or offer a burnt offering which costs me nothing."  As I listened to portions of their new release, I realized they have an understanding that it isn’t about us but it does require something from us…sacrifice.  I would encourage the youth to find the band on iTunes or go to their website www.ornansfloor.com and become familiar with their work.  It may make the week even better if we go in ready to praise Him with the new songs of His children.

For the good of the Kingdom,

Awana. . . . . . . by Jamie Nitz

What a wonderful year!

I can’t believe another year has gone by. We have had a lot of fun this year. The kids have learned so many verses.  They have learned a lot of cool stuff from the Bible.  We had anywhere from 30 to 50 kids each week.  They made cars and raced them at our Grand Prix.  They played many cool games in game time.  All this could not have happened without the many dedicated leaders that come each week to help in this program.

Next year we would like to try some new things. We will have a prayer and planning meeting soon. If you would like to help, or if you have any ideas of things we could do or change, please look for the date and come pray with us and help us to make this program better for our kids.

We could always use more help.  Please let me know if you would like to help in any way.

                                                                                      Thank You.

Church Family-

I want to thank everyone for your notes, letters and expressions of gratitude during the lunch/meeting last month.  I also want to thank my wife Marsha for her support during this time.  God gives us various seasons in our life.  He has blessed me in many ways at Duncan Road and this was just one of them.  Although not necessary, the recognition was appreciated.  As I change hats in the elder body, I pray that everyone will encourage Roger the way you have encouraged me over the years.  My prayer also is that God will continue to strengthen and grow Duncan Road in this new phase of her life.  Thanks again.

Harvesters would like to thank you for volunteering your time to help hungy children, seniors, and families in Kansas City.  Volunteers at Harvesters do the work of roughly 53 full-time employees, so we really couldn’t do it without people like you!  Thank you again for supporting local hunger relief through your efforts.  Paula Pratt, Director of Community Outreach

From Our Elders . . .

With the approach of the summer months our church faces the cash flow stress that most churches do at this time of year.  It seems like every May, church newsletters carry some article reminding folks of the need for continued financial support for the church especially during vacations.  This need is highlighted in these current days of economic crisis.

Actually, we want to take this opportunity to offer praise to God and thanks to all of you for the great faithful support DRC receives week after week.  Yes, we are in a very financially tight situation.  Yes, many of our members are experiencing personal financial hardships.  Yes, the summer months with their higher cooling costs and lower attendance numbers present us with added challenges.

But, our God is faithful and so are you DRC family!  You have been so good to pray, trust the Lord, and give in faith.  We continue to see the provisions made for us to minister the gospel here week in and week out.  Thank you so much and thanks be to God.

There are some things we want you to know.  We want you to know that we are praying for each of you regularly.  Please let us know if you are experiencing loss of income that puts your family into a crisis.  We will work together to find God’s provision for you.  You are not alone, DRC family.  We will get through these difficult days together.  Also we want you to know that we are committed to keeping you informed of your church’s financial status.  Through regular reporting in Congregational Meetings and also with phone tree updates for immediate needs, we will do our best to be sure you know what is going on in the church’s finances.

Would you please pray for us, your elders?  We need your prayers.  And let’s all agree to pray for each other.  May this summer be a great blessing to our God in His church at Duncan Road and for His people.

CHARLIE CHURCHMOUSE…from a corner

You churchpeople have one of the most “interesting” (code word for really strange) pastors imaginable.  Take last Sunday after Morning Worship, for instance.

What would a normal pastor do after services?  Shake hands with people as they leave?  Kiss a few babies.  Maybe even lead a brief meet and greet with the day’s guests, right?  That’s the kind of stuff real, normal pastors do after church.

So what was PL doing?  He was leading one of Blue Spring’s finest into the parking lot while a good part of the flock stood around watching and wondering what PL had been up to that caused as policeman to be pursuing him.

In all fairness we should note that just moments before PL had been pulled over near Lucy Franklin Elementary for speeding by the same cop.  Yep, flashing emergency lights and all, that neighborhood witnessed a young woman leap from the passenger side of PL’s car and run into a house even as the policeman approached the stopped vehicle.  (Just the kind of thing you don’t expect your pastor to be involved with after church services.)

Most pastors would try to limit the awareness of such antics.  But not PL.  Noooo…he brings the cop trailing him back to the church so everybody there can see.  And what about that young lady?  What was up with PL and her?

Well, the approved version of the story is that one of the young mothers in the church locked her infant in her car (along with her house keys) on the church parking lot after morning worship.  PL drove her home to retrieve an extra set of keys and while they were hurrying to get back to the baby the policeman pulled them over.  Once he knew what was happening he followed them back to the church to make sure all was well.

Likely story, that’s what I say.

Better be makin’ tracks,

cc
